NOIDA: The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on October 9, following a Cabinet meeting in Lucknow.

According to the Chief Minister, the decision reflects the state government’s gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the airport, which is expected to become a major aviation hub and one of Uttar Pradesh’s most significant infrastructure assets.
The Cabinet’s resolution also coincides with the completion of 25 years of Narendra Modi’s public service as head of a government, beginning with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001.
Major Aviation Infrastructure for Delhi-NCR
Located in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar district, along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh government under the public-private partnership model.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the greenfield airport on November 25, 2021, and inaugurated its first phase on March 28, 2026. Commercial flight operations commenced on June 15, 2026.
The airport is designed to complement the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and cater to the growing demand for air travel across the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh. Its development is expected to improve regional connectivity and support economic activity, tourism, logistics and industrial growth.
The first phase has an initial passenger-handling capacity of approximately 12 million passengers annually, with expansion planned to accommodate significantly higher traffic in the future.
Formal Renaming Process
While the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the proposal, the formal renaming process involves the applicable approvals at the Union government level. The change in name is separate from the airport’s operational development and expansion plans.
The airport’s renaming places renewed attention on the growing importance of large-scale aviation infrastructure in the National Capital Region, where the new facility is expected to play a complementary role alongside Delhi’s existing international airport.
