New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated a feasibility study to examine the possibility of developing a major road corridor along the Najafgarh drain between Dhansa Border and Wazirabad. The proposed corridor is being assessed for both elevated and at-grade road infrastructure, with consultants invited to examine traffic movement, road geometry, land and utility requirements, and various development options.
As part of the study, the consultant will conduct reconnaissance, traffic and preliminary topographical surveys and prepare three conceptual proposals covering lane configurations, intersections, junctions and service roads. The assessment will also examine requirements for utility shifting, environmental and forest clearances, tentative project costs and land acquisition before the overall feasibility of the corridor is determined.
A detailed traffic assessment will cover different categories of vehicles, pedestrians and non-motorised transport users. This will include 24-hour traffic counts, turning-movement surveys at junctions and origin-destination studies to understand travel patterns. Speed and delay surveys will also be carried out to identify measures for improving traffic flow, road safety and the segregation of local and through traffic.
The study will further include parking surveys and an assessment of existing traffic signals, road markings and signage. A detailed road inventory will document intersections, central verge openings and footpaths, while a Total Station survey will map the proposed corridor and adjoining streets, including building footprints and access points.
The consultant will also have to account for existing and proposed infrastructure projects of agencies including DMRC, NHAI, DDA, PWD and the Railways. Utilities, monuments, green areas and other constraints that could affect the project will be identified as part of the exercise.
Based on the findings, an Integrated Transit Corridor Development Plan will be prepared. The plan is expected to include geometric designs, proposals for better network connectivity around metro stations and mass transit corridors, and measures for multimodal integration. Parking plans will also be developed for the corridor and areas within an approximately 800-metre radius.
The latest initiative comes amid renewed efforts to improve connectivity along the Najafgarh drain. Earlier proposals had examined an elevated or at-grade road between Kakrola Mor and Wazirabad. The current feasibility exercise is intended to assess the corridor’s infrastructure requirements and viability before any final decision is taken.
