Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said the sanctioned AC EMU rakes will be manufactured by three production units of Indian Railways—Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai; Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala; and Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli.

Under the indicative production programme, ICF will manufacture 120 AC EMU rakes, RCF will produce 71 rakes, and MCF will manufacture 47 rakes, taking the total to 238 rakes. The production units have established capabilities in manufacturing modern passenger rolling stock, including AC EMUs, Vande Bharat trainsets and Vande Metro trainsets.

The Railway Board has approved procurement of the sanctioned AC EMU rakes based on existing and proven RDSO/ICF specifications. According to the Ministry, using established specifications is expected to facilitate faster manufacturing and supply of the new rolling stock.

The supply of the AC EMU rakes is planned to begin in 2027, with the entire sanctioned quantity scheduled to be completed by 2030. The phased induction of the new trainsets is intended to bridge the gap between infrastructure commissioning and the availability of rolling stock.

The Ministry said the availability of the first trainsets from 2027, followed by completion of the full requirement by 2030, will support the optimum utilisation of Mumbai’s upgraded suburban railway infrastructure and strengthen the city’s public transport capacity.
