Bengaluru Integrated Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises Ltd (Bi-RIDE) has issued a work order to Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for the supply of 153 air-conditioned broad-gauge AC Metro-type coaches. The contract, valued at approximately ₹1,514 crore, is expected to strengthen the city’s upcoming suburban rail connectivity and improve commuter experience.

According to the project authorities, the coaches will be deployed on Corridors 2 and 4 of the BSRP network. The agreement requires ICF to begin delivery within 18 months, aligning with the targeted opening of the Chikkabanavara–Yeshwantpur section under Corridor 2. The procurement timeline follows directions issued during the Prime Minister’s Pragati review meeting held in December 2025.
Bi-RIDE, a subsidiary of K-RIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company Karnataka Ltd), stated that the scope of work extends beyond coach manufacturing. It also includes detailed rolling stock design, quality inspections, integration, testing, commissioning, and statutory approvals from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The project will further involve coordination with signalling, traction power supply systems, and platform screen door infrastructure.
Initially, K-RIDE had planned to lease coaches from private agencies for operations and maintenance. However, repeated tendering attempts did not yield successful outcomes. Subsequently, the Karnataka government granted an exemption under Section 4(g) of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (KTPP) Act, 1999, allowing direct procurement from ICF.
K-RIDE Managing Director Laxman Singh said the partnership with ICF would ensure timely availability of trainsets once track and systems infrastructure works are completed for the designated corridors. Despite progress, the suburban rail project has faced delays since its sanction in 2020. While Corridor 2 works have recently resumed with fresh contracts, tenders for several pending works under Corridor 4 are yet to be floated.
