Indian Railways Deploys AI Surveillance and IP MPLS Network Across 1,800+ Stations

New Delhi | The Indian Railways has accelerated its digital transformation in 2025–26, deploying advanced telecom infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven systems to enhance passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience, according to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau.

A major milestone has been the expansion of the Unified Telecom Backbone through Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology. This high-capacity network has been commissioned at 1,396 railway stations, enabling seamless connectivity for critical railway applications such as Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).

In a significant push toward passenger safety, AI-enabled Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) have now been deployed across 1,874 stations. These systems integrate advanced video analytics capable of detecting suspicious activities like intrusion and loitering, alongside facial recognition features for real-time monitoring. This move reflects a broader strategy to leverage AI as a core component of railway security infrastructure.

Passenger information systems have also undergone substantial upgrades through the Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS). Equipped with electronic train indicator boards, coach guidance systems, and automated public announcements, IPIS is now integrated with the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) at 1,405 stations, ensuring real-time dissemination of train-related updates.

Additionally, Indian Railways has introduced tunnel communication systems in key projects such as the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), enabling uninterrupted communication between personnel and control centers in challenging terrains.

These developments highlight Indian Railways’ commitment to building a modern, technology-driven transport ecosystem aligned with the vision of Digital India. The integration of AI, robust telecom networks, and smart passenger services marks a decisive shift toward a safer, smarter, and more responsive railway system.
