With these additions, the total sewage treatment capacity commissioned under the Namami Gange Programme has reached 3,976 million litres per day (MLD), while the number of operational Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) has increased to 173 nationwide. During FY 2025–26 so far, nine projects have been made operational across multiple states, strengthening urban sanitation systems and preventing untreated sewage from entering rivers.

Major Projects Commissioned

Shuklagunj, Uttar Pradesh
A 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant has been commissioned at Shuklagunj at a cost of ₹65 crore. Implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) using Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, the facility is expected to benefit nearly three lakh residents. The project focuses on effective interception and diversion of sewage to prevent its discharge into the River Ganga.

Agra, Uttar Pradesh
In the Yamuna basin city of Agra, two STPs of 31 MLD and 35 MLD capacity have been commissioned under the Pollution Abatement Works, Agra project. The overall project, sanctioned at ₹842 crore, aims to create a cumulative capacity of 177.6 MLD across 13 STPs. Once fully implemented, it will serve around 25 lakh people, significantly reducing untreated sewage flow into the River Yamuna.

Strengthening Urban Sanitation and River Rejuvenation

These newly commissioned projects reinforce the core objectives of the Namami Gange Mission—to ensure sustainable river rejuvenation, improve urban sanitation infrastructure, and eliminate the discharge of untreated sewage into India’s major rivers. The continued expansion of modern, technology-driven STPs reflects a long-term commitment to cleaner rivers and healthier cities.
