Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Opens, Cuts Travel to 45 Minutes

The 109.019-km-long Ahmedabad–Dholera Greenfield Expressway (NE-8) has been opened to the public for testing, marking a major milestone under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. Developed at a project cost of ₹5,800 crore, the expressway is rapidly emerging as a critical infrastructure corridor linking Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar districts while providing seamless access to the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).

Designed to transform regional mobility, the expressway significantly reduces travel time between key destinations. The Ahmedabad–Dholera stretch, which earlier took over two hours, can now be covered in just 45 minutes. Similarly, travel between Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar has been cut from more than three hours to under two hours, enhancing efficiency for commuters, traders, and investors alike.

Boost to Dholera’s Economic Ambitions

The improved connectivity is expected to accelerate investments in Dholera, one of India’s most ambitious greenfield industrial smart cities. With direct connectivity and faster access from Ahmedabad, investors can now reach the region within 45 minutes, eliminating a major logistical bottleneck that previously slowed industrial momentum.

Residents from nearby villages have also experienced a tangible shift in daily life. For many, what once felt like a distant city is now within convenient commuting distance, enabling better access to education, healthcare, employment, and urban amenities.

Environment-First Infrastructure Model

Beyond mobility, the expressway sets a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development. According to official data, nearly 60 lakh metric tonnes of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation waste were reused in embankment construction, alongside 22 lakh metric tonnes of fly ash, substantially reducing industrial waste and carbon footprint.

The green corridor initiative includes over 2.7 lakh plants in the median and more than 1.56 lakh avenue plantations, reinforcing ecological balance along the route.

Engineering and Future-Ready Features

The corridor has been designed with a 30-metre-wide median, allowing future expansion to eight lanes. It features a closed tolling system for seamless transit, two modern way-side amenities, and extensive grade-separated infrastructure including 3 railway overbridges (ROBs), 11 interchanges, 14 flyovers, 86 underpasses, and 224 culverts.

Importantly, the expressway offers direct connectivity to the upcoming Dholera International Airport and reserves right-of-way for a planned semi high-speed rail corridor running parallel to the highway—positioning the region as a multimodal transport hub.

Testing Phase Underway

Currently open for public testing, the expressway is allowing commuters to experience faster and smoother travel while authorities assess final operational readiness before full-scale commissioning.

As Gujarat strengthens its industrial and logistics backbone, the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway stands out not merely as a transportation project, but as a transformative corridor reshaping regional connectivity, economic growth, and everyday life.
