India Moves Up to 9th Position Globally in Forest Area; Retains 3rd Spot in Annual Forest Gain

New Delhi: India has achieved a remarkable feat in global environmental conservation, moving up to the 9th position worldwide in total forest area, as revealed by the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bali.

India ranks 9th worldwide in total forest area, FAO GFRA 2025.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, announced the achievement on social media platform X, noting that India’s consistent efforts towards afforestation and forest protection have borne impressive results.

In the previous assessment, India was ranked 10th, and the country has now also retained its 3rd position globally in annual forest area gain, highlighting its continued commitment to sustainable forest management and ecological balance.

Shri Yadav attributed this progress to the visionary policies of the Government of India under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, particularly emphasizing initiatives that encourage community participation, afforestation drives, and environmental awareness.
The Prime Minister’s campaign, ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’, has notably inspired millions to plant trees in honor of their mothers, strengthening the nation’s collective effort toward environmental sustainability.

This growing sense of public involvement is fostering a stronger connection between people and nature, furthering India’s vision of a green and sustainable future. Massive plantation programs by State Governments have also significantly contributed to this achievement.
