Established nearly two decades ago by the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, the park transformed a barren tract of land into one of Sahibabad’s most beloved public spaces. Named after freedom fighter and socialist leader Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, the park was designed to serve multiple community needs—fitness, relaxation, recreation, and environmental enrichment. Families, senior citizens, children, and fitness enthusiasts have all called this space their own. From morning yoga sessions and laughter clubs to evening strolls and weekend playdates, the park once reflected a thriving urban lifestyle centered around health and harmony.
Thoughtful Design, Now Deteriorating
The park’s layout includes wide walking and jogging tracks, a well-shaded open gym, a vibrant children’s play area, rest zones under pergolas, and a centrally located statue of Dr. Lohia surrounded by landscaped flower beds. Palm trees, flowering shrubs like Ruellia and Ixora, and well-planned seating once created a scenic and functional green space.
However, time and apathy have taken a toll. Once functional fountains are dry, grass patches have yellowed, and broken benches and aging play structures now mar the once-lively atmosphere.
More Than Just a Park
What made Lohia Park unique wasn’t just its design—it was its role as a community hub. Located near Raj Bagh Metro Station and surrounded by residential blocks, local shops, and schools, the park formed a crucial piece of social infrastructure. Health camps, awareness drives, and group activities helped foster a collective spirit. Children’s toy train rides (once a hit) and shaded rest areas brought families together, while seniors found solace in the quiet shade of its trees.
Today, many of these activities have diminished. In the absence of consistent upkeep, encroachment by vendors, scattered litter, and dried foliage have altered the visitor experience.
Residents Speak: A Call for Action
Mehar Singh, a yoga instructor who has been conducting sessions in the park, expressed his disappointment:
“It’s heartbreaking to see the park in such poor shape. If government representatives take the initiative, Lohia Park can once again become a green jewel of Ghaziabad.”
Tarun Gupta, a casual visitor, shared:
“The kids’ area is worn down and the space feels unkempt. Adding activities for youth and regular cleaning could bring life back.”
Nitin Singh, a daily walker, remarked:
“Despite the crowd and the aging setup, the park still offers a connection to nature. I hope it gets the care it deserves.”
A Park with Promise
Despite its present challenges, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Park has immense potential. With strategic interventions—such as reviving water features, adding interactive zones, repairing play areas, and enhancing maintenance—the park can reclaim its stature as a modern green space that serves both ecological and social functions.
The question now is whether the civic authorities and local representatives will listen to public voices and restore the park not just for aesthetics but as an essential component of urban well-being.
