New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commenced construction work on the upcoming Shivaji Stadium Metro Station as part of the Central Vista Corridor, marking another significant step in expanding metro connectivity across central New Delhi. The station is being developed under Phase V(A) as part of the extension of the existing Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram Marg.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu was present at the commencement of the work and laid the foundation for the station’s diaphragm wall. He described the beginning of construction at Shivaji Stadium as a major milestone in the continued expansion of the Delhi Metro network.
Underground Interchange With Airport Express Line
The new Shivaji Stadium station will be an underground interchange station, connecting the Magenta Line with the existing Shivaji Stadium station on the Airport Express Line through a 230-metre-long underground subway. The connection is expected to make interchange between the two corridors more convenient for passengers.
The station will also be connected to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station through an 800-metre-long underground subway equipped with travelators, providing pedestrian connectivity between the two stations.
Station to Be Built Below Existing Airport Express Alignment
The diaphragm wall of the new station will reach approximately 38 metres below ground, equivalent to the height of a 12-storey building. The considerable depth is required because the new station is being constructed below the existing Airport Express Line alignment.
The scale of construction will also generate substantial movement of construction vehicles. DMRC estimates that around 3,000 cubic metres of concrete will be required each month, involving approximately 500 transit mixer trips. Excavation is expected to generate nearly 15,000 cubic metres of material every month, requiring about 750 dumper trips, or roughly 25 dumper trips per day.
To minimise disruption to commuters and local residents, DMRC said measures including covering excavated material, washing vehicle wheels, preventing material from spilling onto roads and promptly cleaning affected areas will be adopted to maintain traffic flow and road cleanliness.
9.9-km Central Vista Corridor to Have Nine Stations
The Central Vista Corridor, spanning approximately 9.913 km, will comprise nine underground stations: Shivaji Stadium, Yuge Yugeen Bharat, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial–High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha. Construction at Central Secretariat Metro Station on the same corridor began on June 24, 2026.
The corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity to major government offices, judicial institutions, national memorials and convention facilities in central New Delhi while improving integration between existing and upcoming Metro corridors.
The construction work for Shivaji Stadium Metro Station has been entrusted to Afcons Infrastructure Limited. The station is also expected to benefit office workers, students, visitors to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and passengers using the Airport Express Line.
